What does wool smell like
In particular, the stuffing of an Elizabethan ''flock-bed'' mattress?l
think it would be stuffed with raw wool, rather than a fabric.
Raw wool has a musty smell to it. If you ever smelled lanolin
then you know what wool smells like.
Raw wool has a dirty, oily animal-sheep stench, is full of
sticks and leaves and bugs. It is unlikely those mattresses would have
been stuffed with raw wool.
Washed and probably carded wool would have more likely to have been used.
It would still have a heavily lanolin-sheep smell, but would be free of
debris and fluffy from carding.
